Production Requiments

My Interior design is planning to be the inside of the large cockpit. It is going to have small control area with a slight lounge and crew area for observation. Based off my final design It is going to be divided into a few different zones on the ship area including the main control panel, Crew area, Airlock door and hallway.

It is going to have windows out of the front of the control room with small porthole windows to the side the room. The room will have a heavy airlock style door as you enter. There is going to be multiple computer screens around the room showing information about the ship. These screens are going to be green screened for budget control and for us to change details during post.

The wall on the right of the control room will have a removable section to allow a dolly shot of the control room showing Matilda walking into the room and sitting down at the control desk before taking off. We are going to have removal windows on the front of the ship so we can close up shots of her facial expressions.

On the exterior of the set we are going to have LED screen outside of the windows to show the outer space which we can create during post production. We are choosing to do a LED screen instead of painting as it gives us more control of the movement and not having a still backdrop.

The lighting is going to be built into the set by having an alarm on the door which will be a red spin light as well as the walls are going to have LED strips highlighting places of interest. We are going to have a removal roof so we can light the celling with overhead sky lights as well as red tinted LED lights.

Our practical effects on set will be smoke coming from when the airlock door opens which is when we are going to see the hazmat space suit for the first time.

Written Explination

I have designed my 3D white card model to help the production understand my vision for the set in a more physical aspect. By having both a 2D and a 3D model this is going to allow everyone on set to visualise it as everyone sees in different ways whether it be 2 or 3D. By making a design in sketch I learned very quickly that you could change your design multiple times which saves a lot of money in the budget and time. I spent a lot of time moving items around that would have been stuck down fully as well as changing a lot of the different textures to match the look of the spaceship that is in line with my vision. By making these design models the idea is to give the actors something to work with and visualise it as well as the camera team to work out how they would like to shoot from a variety of different angles including where you can remove a wall and the entire roof. The main way of this thought is going to help the set dressers as in my case I have taken inspiration from the gardens of the galaxy spaceships with the wide open plan cockpit with lots going on. Having the futuristic spaceship theme to show the film in the future and what the technology could look like. I wanted the cockpit to be designed for lots of people which is why it has 14 chairs within it and it’s a large space. This allows us when shooting to show how alone the character really is at a younger age. By making the space huge we are hoping this is going to have a emotional impact on the audience when they see her running into the spaceship for the first time looking nervous and all of the lighting surrounding her. The set dressing hasn’t been tailored around her for this very reason as we want it to seem as she has never stepped into this space before and she is technically stealing it. Overall I would say the mood of the set is quite industrial looking and made to look intimidating for our character with a lot of detail on the walls. Adding the variety of flashing and still lights into the equation it should hopefully look very overwhelming for her.

Evaluation

Overall across this unit I am very very pleased with the outcome of creating a set design from my concept art and the development through each task.

For this unit I had to create a set design based on my concept art piece I had created in the last unit. The concept art I chose to create was a spaceship inspired from guardians of the galaxy to make it have a futuristic look. The concept for the film is the lonely space traveller Matilda has to leave earth before of the dangerous threat that is happening and steals this ultra high tech spaceship from NASA. This ship is designed for interstellar travel however Matilda only goes to the moon as she is only young. When designing this ship I wanted it to be very capacious and large to make it seem huge to Matilda and overwhelming. This is so we can display her emotions of being sad, lost and alone through the camera more. My set design started on sketchup which took numerous days to create and make perfect as I wanted to include a lot of details like texture as well as 3d elements to the set to make it more interring for the audience as well as a more realistic look. I started with the main frame of the ship that would fit inside of the boomsatuma main studio. To do this we created a floor plan using measurements and creating a scale model of a factor of 1:50. By creating the walls in sketch first it really helped me to allocate the space of the design especially with the balconies and the stairs leading to the airlock. After creating my sketch model I was tasked to create my 3D White card model which allowed for a lot of creative freedom when making the design. Unlike when making my sketch model, for my 3D white card I pulled all of my focus to one wall at a time and adding as much texture with pencil as well as 3D elements to the wall such as control panels or piping work before sticking it down with the glue gun. By adding all the detail before gluing meant that it was much easier to keep adding rather than having to glue on the side or trying to add further texture at a later date. I found with my white card model it was very tricky to create the stairs and the chairs because using the card and a pencil it was very fiddly to get it the right size and still look realistic. I decided when making my model that I wanted to keep my original plan to have a removal wall on one of the sides as well as a fully removal roof. This allows me more camera access to greater areas that would have been too tight if not. Also by having a removal roof not only is that we can get stunning overhead shots for when Matilda would be walking in and out, it also allows us to light the set in a much more creative manner as there is a greater space to do so.

When working on sketchup towards the end of making my model I was having some issues where we discovered my set design was too small by a factor of roughly 3. Thos presented a problem initially as trying to work out the scale for the white card model was very tricky so the only solution I had was resizing the whole model and adapting certain items such as chairs and other 3D elements that would of been too big for the wall sizing on the 3D white card model. I had issues when making my white card model especially around the point of creating the removal wall. For this there was a lot of elements that needed to be added to it which once I started I did realise some of the items were not going to be possible. For this I edited the model after my peer feedback to adapt this further to allow for all of the details to be correct and accurate. Another issue that was presented once I started the task was the budget for the set was going to be tight. After spending a lot of hours searching through a lot of D.I.Y sites and including calling individual places to give me quotes I managed to get the whole set build into the allocated budget of £1500 by just £7!

I am very happy with the final result of this set design unit and the way the white card model and sketcup model not only both matched each other but kept really similar to the concept art I am super pleased. If I were to do this unit again I would spend more time on my white card model and less on the sketchup design as I feel I could of included only slightly more detail on the white card model. As well I would keep checking the measurements very often to make sure everything is to the correct sizing needed for the floor plan.

Peer Feedback

Overall Ollie I think your final white card model and 3D model looks really successful and fits the look of your space craft. The detail you have packed it is very impressive, in particular the chairs and walls in your card model looks very detailed and professional. I also really like how you used levels such as the balcony to add some depth to your design which makes the set more interesting for actors to use. To improve your sketch up design double check the dimensions of your sketch up model so it matches our card model and maybe add some hanging light setups to utilise your roof more and make it more realistic as a spaceship.

Ollie I really liked your model that you created for your concept art and was really inspired and amazed about the amount of detail that was put into it - on top of that I just think your process in creating the model went really well and you designed it quite precisely which was something I could clearly see. The design of it gave a really cool atmosphere and mood and I was really impressed fair play!

I would say to improve some added texture around the room would look really cool and add some more realism.
